Match the employer to its investment or advisory decision
Leerink describes itself as a healthcare investment bank headquartered in Boston, with investment banking and capital-markets services. This establishes healthcare advisory presence; verify the office attached to any particular subsector or vacancy.
Fidelity's student page explicitly places both Equity Research Associate and Strategic Advisers Research Associate internships in Boston. The first involves stock analysis and recommendations to portfolio managers. The second involves manager research and multi-asset investing. The common research label hides different objects of analysis.
Bain Capital Private Equity's current biography for Jessica Wang places an Industrials private equity professional in Boston. That provides a concrete local investing example beyond healthcare, without implying that her team is recruiting junior candidates.
| Local path | Preparation decision |
|---|---|
| Leerink healthcare investment banking | Analyse a client's financing or strategic transaction. |
| Fidelity equity research | Recommend a security using business evidence and valuation. |
| Fidelity Strategic Advisers research | Assess managers and portfolio choices rather than treating each task as a stock pitch. |
| Bain Capital Private Equity, Industrials | Test ownership economics, operating changes and the downside at an entry price. |

Add healthcare judgement to the financial foundation
Distinguish healthcare companies selling established products from those dependent on development milestones. Their forecasts, financing needs and valuation methods can differ. A profitable services-company multiple is a poor shortcut for a business without commercial revenue.
Use filings and official disclosures to establish who pays and what can change cash needs. Identify claims requiring clinical or reimbursement expertise, and the missing evidence needed before advising a client.
A science background still needs accounting and transaction reasoning; a finance background needs business understanding before valuation. The generic exercises teach financial mechanics without validating clinical probabilities or supplying a healthcare model.
Write different recommendations for public and private capital
For public-equity research, state the security, price and date. Explain your forecast's difference from the assumptions you think the price reflects, and identify disconfirming evidence. Separate disclosure from forecast.
A private equity work sample needs purchase price, financing and cash supporting the ownership plan. Test debt pressure and exit assumptions. Manager research evaluates a manager's process, portfolio and results; a single stock cannot establish that case.
Original Boston role-choice exercise
A fictional candidate has a laboratory research internship, an accounting course and a draft company analysis. Choose how to adapt that experience for a healthcare bank, an equity research team and a private investment team.
- The company is fictional and is developing a diagnostic product with uncertain commercial adoption.
- The draft describes the product well but contains no supported revenue forecast or financing plan.
- No clinical success rates, valuation figures or hiring outcomes are assumed.
Show the worked reasoning
- For the banking version, identify a client decision such as raising capital or evaluating a partnership; list the cash needs and valuation evidence still missing.
- For the public-equity version, define the security and explain what disclosures would support a view on adoption, financing and the current price.
- For the private investment version, specify the proposed ownership terms, the next funding requirement and the evidence needed before committing capital.
The laboratory experience supports careful product analysis. Each application still needs a financial recommendation suited to its own role, with uncertainty and missing evidence stated plainly.
Check your reasoning: Sending the same scientific summary to all three teams leaves their different financial decisions unanswered.
Use the cohort and office attached to the actual program
Fidelity's reviewed page describes the undergraduate equity research internship for sophomores seeking the summer after junior year; the MBA equity research internship targets first-year MBA students. Strategic Advisers has a separate undergraduate description. Check the current application period for the exact program rather than transferring one route's timing to another.
Leerink's careers page describes a summer banking program for students in their penultimate undergraduate year and, when reviewed, advertises its 2028 program. Treat that as a firm program announcement. Confirm Boston availability, the graduation requirement and any authorization condition in the actual application.
Record openings and requested materials. Headquarters, biographies and internship announcements establish different facts; none guarantees a local vacancy or predictable interview sequence.

Check the boundary of a Boston location
Bessemer labels one office Boston but gives a Wellesley street address. Fidelity's student page separately locates its fixed-income research internship in Merrimack, New Hampshire. These are useful reminders to read the address and work arrangement before assuming that a Boston-area employer means a central Boston commute.
Compare housing quotes against each actual destination and the attendance terms of the offer. Check the whole journey at the working times you would need, including transfers and the final connection. Keep upfront deposits and moving costs separate from recurring spending, and build a reserve for delays without assuming a bonus will cover it.
Check team fit and affordability alongside any university network or laboratory proximity.

Your next actions
- Choose advisory, equity research, manager research or private investing as the primary target.
- Verify the local team and then locate a separate current application.
- Build a company brief with commercial evidence and explicit limits to your expertise.
- Adapt the decision exercise into a role-specific work sample.
- Check cohort eligibility, the workplace address and a budget using current quotes.
Put it into practice
Choose the first task that matches your preparation. These links open the FinTwin study workspace under its normal account and saved-work rules.
- Connect profit, cash and the balance sheet
Translate a product or scientific story into the financial statements it must eventually support.
- Discount cash flows and terminal value
Practise valuation mechanics while keeping unsupported healthcare probabilities out of the model.
- Write an investment-committee decision with a price limit
Add an explicit purchase decision, downside and price discipline to a private investment thesis.
- Harbor Inspection: what is supported by the cash?
Build a generic cash-flow valuation before attempting the additional assumptions of a healthcare company.
Try the task before revealing its worked answer. Compare the method, revise your reasoning and use the workspace’s save or review controls. Reading this guide does not record a completed lesson.
