Choose a New York finance role before choosing an office
Choose a New York finance role by the work you want to produce. Then verify the team, application route and office address.

A New York address can lead to different work
An employer name is too broad a recruiting target here. Evercore's US student page places M&A, Strategic, Defense & Shareholder Advisory, Real Estate Strategic Advisory, and Liability Management & Restructuring in New York. Those activities ask different questions even within an advisory firm.
Goldman Sachs' Emerging Leaders Series identifies New York tracks in investment banking, FICC and equities, asset management, wealth management and investment research. The reviewed page says applications are closed. It confirms a local program footprint, rather than an open analyst vacancy.
| Confirmed presence | Candidate decision |
|---|---|
| Evercore New York M&A and restructuring | Choose transaction valuation or balance-sheet and stakeholder analysis; inspect the specific opening. |
| Goldman Sachs New York banking, markets and research tracks | Decide whether you want to advise a company, work with financial instruments, or form an investment view. |

Prepare the output your chosen role needs
For M&A, practise taking an operating forecast through cash flow, enterprise value and equity value. Explain why an attractive business can be a poor acquisition at the proposed price. Read a public transaction announcement and identify the buyer's purpose, financing and unresolved risks; keep your interpretation separate from disclosed facts.
Restructuring preparation starts with liquidity, maturities and the order in which claims absorb losses. A profitable company can still face a cash shortfall. A polished DCF alone will not explain its funding problem.
A public-equity research candidate needs a falsifiable stock thesis, a valuation and evidence that would change the recommendation. For markets roles, study the particular product, payoff and risks in the job description. Probability, market mechanics or programming may need preparation outside this library.
Private equity and venture investing require an ownership decision about fund capital. Banking experience can be relevant, but a bank application does not apply you to an investment fund. Wealth management, fund operations and investment research also have separate responsibilities.
- Write a transaction recommendation with an alternative to doing the deal.
- Write a stock pitch with a valuation and disconfirming event.
- For private investing, add downside cash needs, entry price and required evidence.
Apply against the firm's rules and your actual cohort
Evercore's FAQ requires cover letters for campus applications, permits up to two applications each year and says a withdrawn application still counts. Its campus route is for current undergraduate or MBA students; recent graduates are directed to entry-level vacancies. These are Evercore rules, not New York market rules.
The same FAQ says international students may apply. That statement does not settle sponsorship or your individual work eligibility. Check the exact vacancy and clarify any unresolved authorization requirement with the employer before committing to a move.
Record the business, location, eligibility and requested materials. Recheck the official portal before submission; a program description alone does not establish an open vacancy.

Compare the actual commute and cash commitment
Evercore lists its New York office at 55 East 52nd Street; Goldman Sachs lists 200 West Street. Use the address attached to your role when assessing housing. A convenient trip to one of these offices may tell you little about the other.
Build a personal budget from written offer terms and housing quotes you can actually obtain. Separate recurring take-home income from discretionary bonus assumptions. Include deposits, moving costs, ordinary bills and a reserve for a delayed start. Compare morning and late-return routes using current MTA information. No citywide rent or salary estimate is needed to reject an unaffordable plan.
Original office-choice exercise
A fictional candidate prefers company analysis, has an M&A interview in Midtown and a markets interview near the other listed office. A prospective apartment is convenient for only one. What should determine the next decision?
- The roles are hypothetical and neither has produced an offer.
- The candidate has prepared a company valuation but has not studied the markets role's product.
- No compensation, housing cost or journey-time assumptions are provided.
Show the worked reasoning
- Compare the actual job responsibilities with the candidate's interests and existing evidence of ability.
- Read the markets description and identify the product knowledge gap before deciding whether to pursue it.
- Price housing and test the commute after the likely working location is clear; do not infer affordability from an interview invitation.
The candidate should resolve role fit and the missing preparation first, while preserving housing flexibility until there is a concrete offer and office assignment.
Check your reasoning: Choosing a job because a speculative apartment makes its office more convenient.

Avoid shortcuts that weaken a New York application
- Replacing a team-specific reason with the size or reputation of New York's finance market.
- Describing sales and trading, research and M&A as interchangeable routes to the same daily work.
- Treating a directory entry or closed discovery program as a current vacancy.
- Claiming that a banking offer guarantees a later private equity or venture role.
- Signing a housing commitment using an assumed bonus or an unconfirmed office assignment.
Your next actions
- Choose a primary job family and write the output you want to learn to produce.
- Save an official team-location source and a separate current application link.
- Check cohort, cover-letter and application-limit requirements before submitting.
- Complete one role-specific work sample and explain its weakest assumption.
- Compare housing and commute options against written terms and a personal cash reserve.
Put it into practice
Choose the first task that matches your preparation. These links open the FinTwin study workspace under its normal account and saved-work rules.
- Move from the business to shareholders
Explain the enterprise-to-equity bridge before discussing an acquisition price.
- Cedar and Pine: an accretive deal at the wrong price
Practise separating earnings accretion from a sound acquisition recommendation.
- Size debt against operating cash and the downside
Build liquidity and debt-capacity reasoning for credit or private investment work.
- Make your experience specific
Turn a general New York preference into a credible explanation of role and team fit.
Try the task before revealing its worked answer. Compare the method, revise your reasoning and use the workspace’s save or review controls. Reading this guide does not record a completed lesson.
