Choose Chicago banking, credit, research or trading
Choose whether to advise on transactions, underwrite a borrower, recommend a stock or work on trading problems. Chicago examples below connect those choices with preparation.

The local options extend beyond a banking-or-trading choice
William Blair's current biography for Jim Conniff places an Industrial Growth Products investment banker in Chicago. The firm's equity research internship page separately identifies Chicago and sector assignments. Those are distinct workstreams within the same employer.
Fidelity's asset-management student page places its Direct Lending Associate Internship in Chicago. Its description involves diligence and investment-committee work for lending opportunities associated with sponsor-backed buyouts. That is private credit work, with a lender's return and downside concerns.
IMC's Quantitative Trader Intern - Summer 2027 page identifies Chicago and describes options theory, trading simulations and work with traders and technologists. The page had an application link when reviewed. Confirm its current status and requirements when you apply.

For a deal role, explain how earnings become cash
For an industrial-company work sample, separate volume from price and maintenance from expansion investment. Assess a backlog's conversion, cancellation risk and delivery resources before treating it as future cash.
A banker explains valuation and strategic logic. A lender tests interest and contractual obligations if operations weaken. A private equity investor adds entry equity, operating changes and exit proceeds. Sponsor upside alone does not establish loan safety.
A single annual cash figure omits seasonal liquidity, covenants and maturities. Ask for those details before drawing an underwriting conclusion.
Test the same company from a lender's perspective
Original fictional cash-capacity exercise
Calculate cash remaining after interest for a fictional industrial borrower, then explain why the result is incomplete for a credit decision.
- All figures are fictional annual US dollars in millions. EBITDA is 12, cash capital expenditure is 3, the increase in operating working capital is 2, cash tax is 1 and cash interest is 2.
- EBITDA contains no noncash or exceptional adjustments requiring further correction. All stated cash items occur in the same year.
- There are no acquisitions, asset sales, distributions, financing fees or other cash flows. Opening unrestricted cash is excluded from the calculation.
Show the worked reasoning
- Start with EBITDA of 12 and deduct capital expenditure of 3 to leave 9.
- Deduct working-capital investment of 2 and cash tax of 1 to leave 6 before interest.
- Deduct interest of 2 to leave 4 of cash after interest and before principal repayment.
The simplified business produces $4 million after interest. A lender still needs principal due dates, intra-year liquidity and applicable covenant terms before assessing repayment capacity.
Check your reasoning: Calling the full $12 million of EBITDA available for debt repayment ignores investment, tax and interest. Calling the remaining $4 million a safe debt limit ignores repayment timing.
Give trading preparation its own syllabus
IMC's reviewed posting seeks a quantitative degree, analytical ability and interest in financial markets; it says previous market knowledge is not required and programming experience is a plus. Its training description includes options theory and simulations. These statements concern that role, rather than every Chicago trading employer.
Use the posting to select probability, expected-value and coding practice. Review incorrect solutions for missed assumptions. Acquisition modelling cannot cover this trading preparation.
The linked lessons support company finance. Quantitative trading candidates need additional probability, statistics, derivatives and programming resources.
Check different cohorts and build a personal relocation case
William Blair describes its equity research internship for rising juniors, while its banking summer analyst description is for students entering their final undergraduate year. IMC's reviewed role has its own graduation window and start requirement. Read these separately instead of assuming the word intern establishes eligibility.
IMC permits one application per role each year and encourages applicants to focus on the best match. A local office list should therefore lead to a ranked shortlist, not indiscriminate applications. Check authorization or sponsorship requirements on the particular vacancy; no citywide rule is established here.
Compare written compensation with housing quotes and the actual workplace address. Use CTA's planner for required travel times, including the final walk and return. Separate moving costs from monthly spending, exclude assumed bonuses, and verify employer relocation support.

Keep the role distinctions in your application
- Calling all Chicago finance work industrial banking or quantitative trading overlooks verified credit and research paths.
- Describing a direct-lending role as buying the borrower's equity confuses the investment being assessed.
- Sending a stock pitch to an advisory interview without discussing the proposed transaction leaves the client's decision unanswered.
- Using a firm's program description to claim a particular team has an open seat.
- Assuming a lower housing quote compensates for a job whose work you do not want.
Your next actions
- Choose a job family and save a current local role or program source.
- Check the relevant graduation window and application limits.
- Complete the cash exercise and name the underwriting information it omits.
- Build a transaction memo, credit view, stock pitch or quantitative study plan for your target.
- Quote housing and test the actual commute before deciding to relocate.
Put it into practice
Choose the first task that matches your preparation. These links open the FinTwin study workspace under its normal account and saved-work rules.
- Explain cash tied up in growth
Explain why an industrial company's revenue growth can consume cash.
- Harbor Calibration: underwrite debt with cash
Practise operating cash and debt repayment, then identify the lender questions that remain.
- Challenge an adjusted earnings figure
Test the earnings base used in a valuation or credit recommendation.
- Choose financing under uncertainty
Compare financing choices using downside cash rather than a headline return alone.
Try the task before revealing its worked answer. Compare the method, revise your reasoning and use the workspace’s save or review controls. Reading this guide does not record a completed lesson.
