Goldman Sachs: match your application to the business

A Goldman Sachs application becomes more convincing when you can explain which business you want and which decisions its people help clients make. Start with that choice, then build a technical and commercial example that fits it.

Choose the business before choosing the brand

Goldman's Investment Banking careers page describes Industry Coverage, Mergers & Acquisitions, Capital Solutions and Transaction Banking, and also discusses Operations and Engineering. Its business navigation separately identifies FICC and Equities, Asset Management, Wealth Management and Global Investment Research. Read the actual posting for the function and responsibilities.

For preparation, identify whose decision you would support. Advising a seller, arranging a financing, evaluating an investment and supporting a trading client each require a different explanation of risk and success. A banking application should explain why client advice and transaction execution interest you. An asset-management application needs a more specific mandate than an ambition to work on deals.

Use the regional program page as your starting point

The Americas 2027 Summer Analyst page describes an undergraduate internship usually undertaken in the third or penultimate year. The Americas New Analyst page describes a full-time route for final-year undergraduate and graduate students with a specified graduation window. Check eligibility for your region and program.

Both pages direct candidates to the application for available locations and businesses. Check the exact requisition, degree requirements and work authorization before drafting an answer. An exploratory event or general student page is useful for learning about the firm; it does not prove a seat is available in a chosen team.

The office directory lists New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Boston. That confirms presence. It does not establish that each office recruits every banking product or has the same analyst responsibilities. When comparing cities, prioritize a verified role and an informed reason to work with its clients over an assumed sector label.

Learn to challenge an attractive headline metric

A useful banking preparation exercise connects the recommendation to both the model and the financing. Reconcile enterprise value to equity value, explain how an acquisition is funded and calculate the earnings effect. Then ask whether the price is supported by cash flows and whether the buyer can absorb a downside.

The point is to be able to change your answer when the facts change. Rehearse a higher financing cost, weaker target earnings and a delayed synergy. Identify which change affects EPS, which affects value and which threatens liquidity. A spreadsheet result without that explanation is incomplete.

An original exercise in accretion and overpayment

Calculate pro forma EPS for a fictional acquisition, then compare the purchase price with the supplied standalone value.

  • All income and purchase amounts are USD millions. Buyer net income is 100 and it has 100 million shares, trading at USD 12 each. Target net income is 20.
  • The equity purchase price is 300, funded by 180 of new debt at 6% interest and 120 of newly issued shares at USD 12. All income figures cover a full year.
  • The tax rate is 25%, and the interest deduction is fully usable. Ignore fees, synergies, foregone cash interest, purchase-accounting adjustments and other changes. The target's independently supplied standalone equity value is 250.
Show the worked reasoning
  1. Buyer standalone EPS = 100 / 100 = USD 1.00.
  2. After-tax new interest = 180 × 6% × (1 - 25%) = 8.1. Pro forma net income = 100 + 20 - 8.1 = 111.9.
  3. New shares = 120 / 12 = 10 million. Pro forma shares = 110 million; EPS = 111.9 / 110 = USD 1.0173, about 1.7% accretive.
  4. Price exceeds the supplied standalone equity value by 300 - 250 = 50. With no synergies or other benefits assumed, the exercise supplies no value justification for that premium.

The deal increases EPS under these simplified assumptions, yet its 50 premium remains unsupported. The recommendation requires valuation and risk analysis beyond the accretion calculation.

Check your reasoning: Equating EPS accretion with value creation, or subtracting pre-tax interest from already after-tax net income.

Turn firm research into a view of a client problem

Use public filings to investigate a company's financing or strategic decision. Explain the business model, cash generation and competing alternatives. Give evidence that would reverse your recommendation. Date market data and distinguish announced transactions from completed ones.

For M&A, explain why the buyer is a plausible owner and what happens if synergies do not arrive. For financing, compare obligations across a realistic cash-flow range. For investing, state the mandate and what would make the investment unattractive at its price. These original practice tasks do not describe Goldman's selection exercises.

Fix the role mismatch before polishing your wording

  • Do not treat every Asset Management role as private-equity investing. Read the investment strategy and function before choosing an LBO preparation plan.
  • Use current business terminology when discussing the posting. The checked investment-banking careers page uses Capital Solutions; old recruiting summaries may organize the work differently.
  • Avoid a motivation based entirely on prestige or future exits. Explain which present-day client problem attracts you and what you have done to understand it.
  • A city preference cannot substitute for evidence about a group. Verify the role instead of promising yourself a particular office-to-team allocation.

Your next actions

  1. Identify the business, function, program and location in the live requisition.
  2. Write a motivation that explains the work and one relevant personal example.
  3. Calculate the acquisition exercise and explain why EPS and value can disagree.
  4. Prepare one dated company recommendation with a clear reason to change your mind.

Put it into practice

Choose the first task that matches your preparation. These links open the FinTwin study workspace under its normal account and saved-work rules.

  1. Solve the earnings trade-off in mixed financing

Connect new debt, after-tax interest and new shares to EPS.

  2. Discount cash flows and terminal value

Build a value argument independent of headline accretion.

  3. Cedar and Pine: an accretive deal at the wrong price

Practise recommending a transaction after testing price and financing.

  4. Solve the break-even synergy requirement

Translate a financing structure into the operating benefit it requires.

  5. Make your experience specific

Support your motivation with actions and results you can explain.

Try the task before revealing its worked answer. Compare the method, revise your reasoning and use the workspace’s save or review controls. Reading this guide does not record a completed lesson.
