J.P. Morgan: choose advisory, capital markets or corporate banking
Choose the client problem you want to work on before choosing a J.P. Morgan application. Advising on an acquisition, arranging capital and supporting an ongoing corporate relationship share financial foundations, but they call for different evidence of interest and judgement.

Start with the work you want to explain
The Investment Banking Full-Time Analyst page describes Advisory, Capital Markets and Coverage groups. The Global Corporate Banking analyst page separately describes serving large corporate, financial-institution and public-sector clients while working with corporate bankers and product partners. These are useful distinctions when deciding what you want to learn.
Use the comparison below as a preparation lens. It is not a promise about staffing, rotations or the tasks in a particular office. A strong application connects your interests to the work named in the requisition and to something you have already investigated.
| Role direction | Decision to practise | Evidence you could prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Advisory | Should a client buy, sell or remain independent? | A short alternatives analysis with a defensible valuation range. |
| Capital markets | Which funding structure can the client execute and sustain? | A comparison of interest cost, dilution, maturity and downside liquidity. |
| Industry coverage | How does a sector change the client's strategic choices? | A sector view linked to one company's financial statements. |
| Corporate banking | How do financing needs fit an ongoing client relationship? | A cash-flow and debt-capacity assessment with questions for product specialists. |

Read the program and the location together
J.P. Morgan publishes separate investment-banking internship and full-time analyst pages. The internship description includes joining an investment-banking group and exposure to transactions. These pages establish routes to investigate; they do not establish that an application is available for your graduation year or preferred city.
The application sections say that displayed locations are those where the program is currently open. Read the current requisition for the country, office, graduation window and work-authorization requirements. Record its title and identifier before tailoring your materials. A broad Commercial & Investment Bank label alone does not identify an M&A analyst role.
For a New York, Chicago or San Francisco preference, separate your reason to live there from evidence about the team. Investigate the named industry, product and client problem. A city cannot guarantee a sector assignment, internal transfer or future investing role.

Prepare the valuation and the financing constraint
For advisory, start with how profit becomes cash, how enterprise value becomes equity value, and why multiples require consistent earnings definitions. Connect the valuation range to the client's choice by explaining its drivers and the evidence that would narrow it.
For capital-markets or corporate-banking interests, add debt service and liquidity. Practise explaining how a profitable borrower can still run short of cash when receivables or inventory grow. Distinguish an earnings multiple, a leverage measure and an interest-coverage measure. They answer different questions.
An original acquisition-financing exercise
A fictional buyer values a target and proposes debt financing. Reconcile the equity price and test the proposed debt against the supplied screening limits.
- All amounts are USD millions. Target enterprise value is 500; existing debt is 80; excess cash is 20. There are no other value-bridge adjustments.
- Proposed new acquisition debt is 300 at 8% annual cash interest. Target annual EBITDA is 60. The exercise's screening limits are maximum debt/EBITDA of 4.0x and minimum EBITDA/cash interest of 3.0x.
- The new debt replaces all existing debt. Ignore fees, amortization and taxes in this screening calculation. The ratios are fictional exercise constraints, not J.P. Morgan lending standards.
Show the worked reasoning
- Equity purchase price = enterprise value minus existing debt plus excess cash = 500 - 80 + 20 = 440.
- Proposed leverage = 300 / 60 = 5.0x, exceeding the supplied 4.0x limit.
- Annual interest = 300 × 8% = 24; interest coverage = 60 / 24 = 2.5x, below the supplied 3.0x minimum.
- The leverage limit permits 60 × 4.0 = 240 of debt. The coverage limit permits (60 / 3.0) / 8% = 250. The tighter limit is 240.
Debt must fall by at least 60 to meet both stated screens. At 240, cash taxes, investment, working capital and repayment timing still need testing.
Check your reasoning: Treating the 440 equity price as either enterprise value or the amount the borrower can safely finance. Price, funding uses and debt capacity require separate calculations.
Write one client brief from three perspectives
Choose a public company and use its latest filed statements and a dated transaction announcement. Write one page explaining the business, the strategic objective, the likely funding need and the largest uncertainty. Label your interpretation separately from the company's disclosed facts.
Now change the audience. For an acquisition adviser, compare buying with building or doing nothing. For a financing team, compare debt with equity and describe the trade-off between cash obligations and ownership dilution. For a corporate banker, explain recurring liquidity needs and the information needed to judge resilience. Use the exercise to test which work you find most interesting.
Avoid borrowing an answer from the wrong role
- An M&A-only motivation can leave a corporate-banking application unexplained. Describe why the ongoing client and financing questions interest you.
- A debt-funded deal can look attractive on earnings while weakening liquidity. Show both before recommending a structure.
- A generic model needs sector adjustments. Banks and insurers require different balance-sheet and regulatory analysis from an ordinary industrial company.
- Do not present FinTwin practice, a virtual experience or a public transaction summary as employment experience or access to the firm's interview materials.
Your next actions
- Save the specific requisition's role, office, eligibility requirements and review date.
- Write a role-specific motivation using one piece of work you completed.
- Rebuild the exercise's equity bridge and debt screens without looking at the solution.
- Prepare a dated company brief and explain how the recommendation changes under a cash-flow downside.
Put it into practice
Choose the first task that matches your preparation. These links open the FinTwin study workspace under its normal account and saved-work rules.
- Connect profit, cash and the balance sheet
Explain the difference between reported earnings and the cash a client can use.
- Move from the business to shareholders
Keep enterprise value, equity price and financing needs separate.
- Size debt against operating cash and the downside
Practise cash and coverage constraints; this is generic credit preparation, not a bank's underwriting policy.
- Cedar and Pine: an accretive deal at the wrong price
Connect acquisition advice to financing and valuation judgement.
- Read leverage and coverage together
Check why meeting one debt ratio does not settle financing resilience.
Try the task before revealing its worked answer. Compare the method, revise your reasoning and use the workspace’s save or review controls. Reading this guide does not record a completed lesson.
